East Tallinn Central Hospital to continue scheduled cancer treatments
East Tallinn Central Hospital has been limiting scheduled treatment since 22 October due to the increased need for hospitalisation of COVID-19 patients. Despite the difficult situation in scheduled treatment, cancer patients will continue to receive care as planned.
According to Dr Andrus Arrak, Head of East Tallinn Central Hospital Surgery Clinic, the treatment of patients with malignant tumours will continue in all specialised surgery centres and the Centre of Oncology of the Clinic of Internal Medicine pursuant to the patients’ treatment plans and there will be no concessions in waiting periods. The Centre of Oncology is one of the few subdivisions of the hospital whose employees are not used to staff COVID departments, and this is due to the priority of cancer treatment.
Even first-time oncology patients continue to have access to inpatient appointments. Repeat patients also have the possibility to use remote consultation services and online consultation with general practitioners.
For cancer treatment to be effective, time is of the essence both in the detection of cancer and at all stages of the diagnostic process as well as when starting treatment and combining treatments.
On average, East Tallinn Central Hospital has 4800 oncology patients receiving cancer treatment every year. For more information on cancer treatment, visit https://cancer.itk.ee.
