Cervical examination with a colposcope or colposcopy
Colposcopy is an examination that helps to detect cervical cancer and precancerous conditions (cervical dysplasia). The examination shall be conducted by a gynaecologist.
The need for the examination shall be determined by a gynaecologist or a midwife, a referral is required. With the help of a colposcope (a special microscope), it is possible to monitor the cervix in more detail and detect changes in the cervix. The examination is similar to a gynaecological examination, it takes about 15-20 minutes. If required, the gynaecologist can take a tissue sample from the cervix during the examination, the sample will always be sent for a histopathological examination. The examination will not be performed during menstruation.
