Hearing tests

East Tallinn Central Hospital has one of the two higher stage hearing centres in Estonia. We offer help for patients with a hearing disability from the age of 2 months to advanced age.

The centre has two special sound isolation booths for hearing tests and in addition to other tests, we also carry out the third stage test of hearing screening for newborns.

Hearing tests

Subjective hearing tests

  • Determination of hearing threshold
  • Determination of loudness discomfort level
  • Speech audiometry
  • Play audiometry

Objective hearing tests

  • Tympanometry
  • Determination of stapedius reflexes
  • Determination of brainstem evoked potentials
  • Brainstem evoked potential screening test
  • OAE (otoacoustic emission) determination

Hearing tests for newborns

All newborns undergo hearing screening (OAE) at the maternity hospital. In case of a negative response, another, retest, is carried out at the hospital. Infants who do not undergo the screenings performed at the northern Estonian maternity hospitals, are referred to further tests at the Ear-Nose-Throat Centre. The determination of auditory brainstem response (ABR), which is performed during the 2nd–3rd month, takes place at the Ear-Nose-Throat Centre. In case of early aid and intervention, the negative impact of the congenital hearing disability to the quality of life can be reduced.

A referral from a family or specialist doctor is required for the examination! Referral from a family or specialist doctor or midwife required for newborn hearing examinations (nurse's referral is not valid).
