Screening test for gastrointestinal bleeding (faecal occult blood test)

Occult blood is an amount of blood in the faeces which is above physiological levels but invisible to the naked eye.

An occult blood test allows early detection of gastrointestinal bleeding which might be caused by many different diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The test is also used as a early screening test for colorectal cancer.
