Colonoscopy

This is an examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract. The large intestine, and sometimes also the end of the small intestine is observed. The examination generally lasts for up to half an hour.

Preparation of the intestine (PIM) is required. During the examination, it is possible to take tissue samples and perform treatment procedures, if necessary (if there are no contraindications, all polyps will be removed from the intestine in the course of the primary colonoscopy) (see taking a biopsy, polypectomy). The examination is generally not painful; however, medications making it easier to endure the procedure will be administered during the examination, if necessary.
