East Tallinn Central Hospital and Ehitus5ECO OÜ entered into a contract for the renovation of the D block of the Magdaleena Unit. Construction work will begin on 15 March. Until the completion of the building, patient appointments will partly take place in a temporary modular building erected in the courtyard of the hospital.
According to Chairman of the Board Tarmo Bakler, the D block of the Magdaleena Unit will be renovated into a modern health centre.
“At the moment, the war in Ukraine is the main topic on everyone’s mind, but the COVID pandemic is not yet over,” explains Tarmo Bakler. “Europe is changing; we have to be prepared for the difficulties in health care, which have lasted for more than two years, to continue for some time. Looking to the near future, it is important to regularly upgrade the hospital’s infrastructure, thereby ensuring a modern working and treatment environment for staff and patients alike.”
The project covers the full renovation of more than 4395 m² of the total 6360 m² area of the D block of the Magdaleena Unit. During renovation, the entire façade and roof of the building will be insulated and given a new finish, the ventilation systems will be upgraded, the building’s heating system will be replaced and the renovated area will be given a modern interior. The renewed Magdaleena health centre will open its doors to patients in spring 2023. It will continue to house general practitioners, East Tallinn Central Hospital specialists and the Centre of Health and Wellbeing.
Due to the renovation work taking place in the D block of the Magdaleena Unit, a temporary modular building was opened in the courtyard of the hospital on 28 February. The modular building will become a replacement for receiving patients in the part of the hospital undergoing renovations until the end of the renovation period. “The construction work taking place next door is naturally disruptive, but I’m certain that the health centre due to be completed in a year’s time will outweigh any temporary inconveniences,” adds Bakler.
Once the renovations are complete, the temporary modular building will be dismantled and the courtyard of the Magdaleena building will be restored to its former landscaping.
The renovation of the D block of East Tallinn Central Hospital’s Magdaleena Unit, including the design, will cost 6.8 million euros; the project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The work is due to finish in 12 months. The contractual partner for the renovation of the building is Ehitus5ECO OÜ and the designer is Projekt O2 OÜ.
