East Tallinn Central Hospital will open its second department for COVID patients today on 3 February. The department to be opened will have 12 beds. The new department will be opened in the premises of the Surgery Clinic on Ravi Street. The hospital now has 54 COVID beds in total, nine of which are equipped for grade II and six for grade III intensive care. Six of the beds are for gynaecology patients and one bed is for patients suffering from eye conditions.

“The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has led to less severe cases, but the number of people needing hospitalisation has inevitably gone up with the record number of infections we are now seeing,” says Ene Halling, Board Member and Head of Treatment of East Tallinn Central Hospital.

There will be restrictions on planned treatment in surgical areas (general surgery, spine surgery, orthopaedics, urology) due to the opening of the new department. Previously, COVID beds caused restrictions in planned treatment in areas of internal medicine such as cardiology, pulmonology, neurology and gastroenterology.

Other planned treatment will proceed in East Tallinn Central Hospital to the extent possible, but the hospital’s Crisis Board is monitoring the situation on a daily basis to make decisions on the continuation of planned treatment as the situation evolves. The Women’s Clinic and Eye Clinic are also prepared to take in COVID patients.

As of the morning of 3 February, there are 37 COVID patients admitted in East Tallinn Central Hospital.
