As of Monday, 9 August, East Tallinn Central Hospital Blood Centre has been using electronic computerised crossmatch of blood components (ECC).

“With EEC, the patient’s and the donor’s blood are no longer coming into physical contact, and their blood groups are being compared by a validated information system,” said Senior Laboratory Medicine Doctor Dr Renna Truus. “ECC can be used in a patient whose ABO/RhD blood group has been identified twice, with the last detection having been done from the current blood sample, and when screening for erythrocyte antibodies is negative. ECC will not be performed in patients with typed antibodies, nor in patients with positive antibody screening.”

ECC has been used in healthcare since the 1990sIt has been in use in North Estonia Medical Centre since 2014. As a result of the last stage of a three-year eLaboratory development project, East Tallinn Central Hospital is now the second healthcare institution in Estonia where ECC is in use.
