Come and get vaccinated against ticks!

05.04.2023

April is the right time to start vaccinating against ticks.

Estonia has a lot of forests and grasslands where it is great to spend time. However, our nature is also attractive to ticks. Ticks do not only live in the forest; they are quite often found in the city and in home gardens. Ticks in Estonian nature spread two diseases that are dangerous to humans: tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a bacterial disease that responds well to antibiotic treatment. Encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, is caused by a virus that ticks release into the bloodstream with their saliva when they attach to the skin. Tick-borne encephalitis is a serious disease that can cause permanent health damage. Fortunately, it is possible to protect yourself against encephalitis with vaccination.

Starting vaccination in April ensures protection for the summer. Vaccination consists of three injections given over the course of a year. After that, vaccination needs to be repeated every three or five years.

Have you ever started vaccination and left the course unfinished? Don’t worry. Register for a consultation at the vaccination centre of East Tallinn Central Hospital by calling +372 666 1900. The consultation is free of charge. There is a charge for the vaccination: the cost of one dose is 36 euros for adults and 29 euros for children up to 15 years old.
